The strict Islamic forbiddance on suicide attacks
Shaikh Muhammad bin Saalih Al-‘Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) said:
“I see that acts of suicide are haraam (forbidden), due to His saying, The Most High:
وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا أَنفُسَكُمْ
((And do not kill yourselves…)) (An-Nisaa: 29)
And that the one that commits suicide is killing himself so is deserving of being punished in Jahannam (the Hell-fire) with that which he has killed himself with – as has come in the Sunnah. Likewise it is incorrect to make an analogy of his action to that of the one who plunges in the rows of the disbelievers (in battle) despite the likely assumption that he will die, because this individual could survive – as has occurred many times. As for the one that commits suicide; then he is dead – without doubt, as well as if he (the individual in battle) is killed; then he is killed with the weapon of other than himself, whilst the one that commits suicide is the killer of his own self – by way of his own weapon.”[1]
The Shaikh said likewise:
“The saying of the one that states regarding this that: it is permissible; then it is not founded upon any basis, rather it is in reality built upon corrupt opinion, because the bad outcome that comes about through this is many many times more.”[2]
Shaikh Al-Albaanee (rahimahullaah) was asked: Acts which are carried out; martyrdom attacks – or suicide (attacks); are they permissible or not?
The Shaikh said: “No; they are impermissible.”[3]
Shaikh Ahmad An-Najmee (rahimahullaah) said:
“You ask concerning the ruling of suicide attacks which you described; these attacks are attacks which are forbidden – and it is impermissible to carry them out as they are based upon treachery as well as upon affairs which are hidden, there occurs within them the disguising of the ones that are treacherous. Whilst betrayal is impermissible and treachery is forbidden, even if the intent behind it was to afflict harm upon the enemy; and even if the enemy was aggressor as well as oppressive…”[4]
Shaikh Muqbil bin Haadi Al-Waadi’ee (rahimahullaah) was asked concerning the ruling on suicide attacks, he replied:
“It is killing oneself (i.e. suicide) without doubt; it likewise does not prove valiance due to the mere reasoning that some women do this. It is tantamount to a push button which is pressed and it blows up, whilst valiance is that a person comes forth with his appliance (weapon) and fights until he is killed, and the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa ‘alaa aalihi wa sallam) refused to pray over the one that killed himself.”
The Shaikh went on to say:
“What is important O brothers; is that some of the contemporaries contradict The Book and the Sunnah, and attempt to justify their actions with the masses through doubts that are frailer than the spider’s web – and Allaah’s aid is sought.”[5]
It is impermissible to cooperate with or harbour those that perpetrate terror attacks
Shaikh Ahmad An-Najmee (rahimahullaah) said:
“It is impermissible to harbour/hide the organizers of these suicide attacks, and whoever harbors/hides them; then he is counted as being from amongst them and as a facilitator for them, and the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:
((May Allaah’s curse be upon one who shelters a Muhdith))
– Reported by Muslim; and the meaning of Muhdith is: that he engages in a criminal act which (the religion of) Islaam rejects as well as repels it. So it is impermissible to cooperate with them upon that.”[6]
Notifying the authorities of those that falsely encourage the youth upon Jihaad or plan to engage in acts of terror
Shaikh Saalih Al-Fawzaan (hafidhahullaah) was asked:
Q: If we are aware of those who encourage the youth upon Jihaad and give them funding without the permission of the Ruler, should the authorities be notified of the like of this individual? What is your advice for him and his like?
The Shaikh responded:
“Firstly he should be advised; if he complies and so abstains from this type of thing then Alhamdulillaah (all praise is for Allaah). If he does not comply; then he should be reported to those in authority in order to seize him so that he does not cause harm to the Muslims and cause harm to the children of the Muslims.”[7]
Shaikh Ahmad An-Najmee (rahimahullaah) said:
“It is permissible to cooperate with the disbelievers who are not in a state of warfare against those that conduct terrorist attacks, whether they be from the Muslims or the disbelievers. As silence regarding them brings about harm upon Islaam and the Muslims, so it will be assumed that Islaam is a religion of terror and a religion of corruption and a religion of treachery and betrayal. Whilst Islaam is free from all of this.”[8]
The kind of people who engage in these forbidden acts
Shaikh Al-Fawzaan said:
“However these (inaudible) later ones, increased over the Khawaarij in that they blow up houses and buildings – this is from making corruption on the earth – and this is an addition to the ideology of the Khawaarij. So they are upon the ideology of the Khawaarij and increased upon it with that which was never with the Khawaarij (of old), the Khawaarij combat in battles and they fight those that fight against them. As for their entering into homes and blowing them up as well as in the streets – then this is an excess upon the ideology of the Khawaarij – this is making corruption upon the earth – and Allaah’s refuge is sought; this is an affair which is impermissible.”[9]
Shaikh Ahmad An-Najmee (rahimahullaah) said:
“What is important; is that these attacks emanate from a people who are ignorant – they are ignorant of the legislation and so they carry out actions that are based upon emotion without looking at whether they (the actions) are allowed in the legislation or not! So they see the oppression of the enemies; as well as their tyranny and so they think that whatever they themselves carry out; then it has an aspect of correctness – and it is not the case; and yet there may be someone who gives them fatwa upon the permissibility of such attacks.
Likewise in that there occurs a felony upon the rest of the Muslims, in that the enemy increases in animosity against them; as well as in oppression and tyranny towards them. Take a look for example at the attacks which occurred in America, what resulted from it by way of wrongdoing towards Islaam and its people as well as aggression against them!!”[10]
The religion of Islaam prohibits terrorism so attributing such acts to the religion is incorrect
Shaikh Al-Fawzaan said regarding the wrongful allegations put forth against the religion of Islaam:
“…From that is their description of it (the religion of Islaam) as being terroristic and savage, and yet they forget that terrorism and savagery and killing nations and overpowering in dominion over the creation without any due right as well as all of the attributes of blameworthiness are in the religion of disbelief – and are the attributes of the disbelievers. The fact that there transpires from some of those that affiliate themselves to Islaam some incorrect conduct; either due to ignorance or due to evil intent; that cannot be attributed to Islaam, because Islaam prohibits that. The path of liberation from this bad accusation against Islaam is to clarify that the actions of these people are not from Islaam; rather they are individual acts of conduct.”[11]
Shaikh Zaid bin Haadi Al-Madkhali (rahimahullaah) said:
“So they (the renegade Khawaarij) harm the Muslims and calumniated against the call to Islaam and have distorted the good reputation of Islaam with those who do not know Islaam. As for those who know Islaam; then no matter how the people go about to offend in the name of Islaam then (they know that) Islaam is indeed free of their offence and their disposition.
Therefore it is impermissible for anyone to accuse Islaam, because some of those that associate themselves to Islaam carry out that which Islaam prohibits and is far removed from it and fights against it – such as the likes of the Khawaarij, except that they (the Khawaarij) will not succeed. They are incited by envy and rancour and an envelopment (of evil deeds) which has enveloped their hearts and hence they arrive at envy and atrocious ignorance.”[12]
From some of the many corrupt outcomes of terrorist attacks
Shaikh Muhammad bin Saalih Al-‘Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) said in his sermon after the bombing in the city of Al-Khobar (Saudi Arabia):
“As for its corrupt outcomes (i.e. of suicide bombings and terrorist atrocities) then:
Firstly: From the corrupt outcomes of that is that it is sinfulness to Allaah and His Messenger, as well as the desecration of that which is sacred/inviolable with Allaah and it brings about the curse of Allaah and His Angels and the whole of mankind – as well as there not being accepted any dismissal nor any equitability from the one that carries it out.
Secondly: From its corrupt outcomes is the distortion of the good reputation of Islaam, for the enemies of Islaam will exploit the like of this event in order to distort the good reputation of Islaam and to deter the people from it. Despite the fact that Islaam is free of that, for the mannerisms of Islaam are: truthfulness and righteousness and faithfulness, alongside this the Islamic religion warns against this and its likes – in the most vehement of warnings.
Thirdly: From its corrupt outcomes is that fingers from internally as well as externally will point to this being from the makings of those that adhere to (practice) Islaam. Despite the fact that we know – in absolute certainty of knowledge that those that are the adherents of the legislation of Allaah – in reality – would not accept the like of that, nor would they ever be pleased with it. Rather; they free themselves from it and reject it with the utmost rejection.
Fourthly: From its corrupt outcomes is that many of the general masses who are ignorant of the reality of adherence to the religion of Allaah; they will look at many of those that do adhere (to the religion) yet are free from this type of doing with an eye of enmity and fear (dread) and caution and point of warning. Just as we hear regarding some of the ignorant ones from the masses that they warn their sons from observance/adherence (to the religion).
Fifthly: From the corrupt outcomes of this ugly action – I mean the bombing in Al-Khobar; is that it impels chaos in this country which is such that it is befitting of being the strongest of the countries of the world in safety and stability, because it incorporates The House of Allaah which He has made as a resort/refuge and as a place of safety.
Sixthly: From the corrupt outcomes of this atrocious act is that which occurs through it by way of the loss of the souls and the wealth; as well as suffering damage in something from that. Just as that has been witnessed by the people in the news media. The people have seen in the media that which they have witnessed from that, and indeed the hearts gush out and it is heart-rendering and tears are shed when a person sees children upon the nursing (hospital) beds; from them being those that are afflicted in their eye or their ear or their hand or one’s leg or any other part of their body…
Is there anyone who agrees to that? Or is pleased with it?!
Does the inner conscience not become agitated at the like of this catastrophe?!
I do not know what is intended by this act?!
Is it rectitude that is intended?!
For rectitude does not come with the like of this, indeed; an evil deed does not come with a good one, nor can evil means be paths to rectitude – ever, how then can an impurity be cleansed with that which is of greater impurity than it?!”[13]
